TJ Schmaltz

Terrence (TJ) Schmaltz has been a passionate part-time instructor with the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s School of Business, teaching various law, business, and human resource management courses since 2005. He is also the chief people and legal officer for Prospera, Canada’s sixth-largest credit union, with executive oversight for all human resource management, communications, and legal affairs.

TJ started his career as a labour and employment lawyer before transitioning into senior human resource management roles. He has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, leveraging his legal and business experience.

A chartered professional in human resources (CPHR) and a senior certified professional (SCP) with the US Society for Human Resource Management, TJ was granted the title of Fellow Chartered Professional in Human Resources (FCPHR) by CPHR Canada in 2018. He holds a bachelor of common law (LLB) and a bachelor of civil law (BCL) from McGill University.

He is the former chair of the board for CPHR BC & Yukon and became the chair of the board for CPHR Canada in 2020. He also serves on the board of directors for Ocean Wise.

TJ is a proud husband and father, living with his wife and son in Vancouver.
