Randy Schwartz
Randy Schwartz is the director of the Crown Law Office—Criminal, Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario. In this role, he leads an office of more than 100 prosecutors responsible for Ontario’s criminal appeals, large and complex commercial crime prosecutions, justice prosecutions, criminal law policy and other advice to the Attorney General, and prosecution and investigation support for Ontario’s many assistant Crown attorneys and police services.
Prior to taking this position, Randy was general counsel at the Crown Law Office— Criminal. For more than 20 years, he has appeared for the Crown on appeals to the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada, including several leading cases on the Charter section 8 right to be secure against unreasonable search or seizure. He founded and led the Ministry’s Search & Seizure Experts Group and the Ministry’s Computer & Internet-Related Crime Team. For several years, he also acted as deputy director overseeing all Ontario matters relating to extradition and requests for international assistance under the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act. He has delivered countless lectures on the law of search and seizure and electronic surveillance to members of the judiciary, prosecutors, the criminal bar, police services, and regulators across Canada and the United States.
